About Flagstaff Friends Meeting

The Religious Society of Friends is a worldwide religious organization whose members are formally known as Friends or informally known as Quakers. It is based on the idea that individuals can have a personal relationship with the divine without the need for intermediaries.

Flagstaff Friends Meeting is one of four Meetings in Arizona, with others in Phoenix, Tempe, and Tucson.

An Introduction to Quaker Worship

We meet in a silence of expectant listening, letting go of the inner disturbances of daily life and waiting for the guidance of the Inner Light. A Meeting may be completely silent or, as more often happens, someone will feel moved to speak, to share with the Meeting something which may be of help or guidance to others.

An important part of Quaker belief is that there is that of God in every person, and that by quietly and devoutly listening to the leadings of this Inner Light and following them we will follow the path God has set for us. It is on this belief that our Meeting for Worship is based.

History of Flagstaff Quaker Meetinghouse

The Meetinghouse that Flagstaff Quaker Meeting now owns was designed and built by Conrad Pessarra who was born in Germany. Conrad was known as a good  farmer and a skilled carpenter. He homesteaded 160 acres at the base of Anderson Mesa. He married Florence Norman - a graduate of the normal school (now NAU) - and moved to Flagstaff where he built a nicely made home at 402 South Beaver Street. Florence taught at South Beaver School until her retirement.
